For the province of Burgenland, HAYDN YEAR 2009 represents the zenith of some 20 years of endeavours to establish Eisenstadt as the primary worldwide centre for the music of Joseph Haydn through a broad spectrum of Haydn-related activities, ranging from highest-quality performances of his works to intensive academic research. Of paramount importance musically is the annual Haydn Festival, which draws interested visitors and music lovers to Eisenstadt from all over the world. The establishment of the Haydn-Zentrum in Eisenstadt has made it possible not only to foster research on our “genius loci” but also to present his life and works to the public in museum form at original locations.

Thus, from the point of view of the cultural policy of our province, 2009 will be the culmination of many years of intensive work. Burgenland intends not only to pay tribute to its most famous composer, but to present his works in comprehensive form. We have been preparing intensively for this important occasion, since we want to make it very special for our guests and at the same time achieve sustainability for culture and tourism in our province.

These objectives are reflected in the comprehensive programme which we intend to offer our visitors, who can expect many musical highlights and international stars as well as a comprehensive, integrated exhibition presented across four venues: “The Haydn Phenomenon”.

I cordially invite you to participate in this unique cultural year and select your own individual programme of events. Come and get acquainted with Burgenland not only as a beautiful province but as a satisfying cultural experience.
