It is uncommon that a single place holds so much importance for a historical composer, as Eisenstadt does for Joseph Haydn. Specifically: Esterházy Castle in Eisenstadt where many of Haydns works were performed for the first time. Once again, the castle will take centre stage when the master will be extensively honoured in HAYDN-YEAR 2009. Not only as a performance location and original site, but also as the centre of Haydns world, the genius loci of which inspires musicians, as well as those who conceptually maintain Haydns heritage. The Haydn-Festival of Eisenstadt has a 20-year tradition; over two decades, the composers profound and manifold works captured the attention of musicians, scientists and curators. The HAYDN-YEAR 2009 concert programme has thus reached the dimension of one big dramaturgical composition. While each part can stand on its own - not least owing to contacts expanded over the years to great and the greatest Haydn-interpreters - "the totality", as festival director Walter Reicher stresses, "is by far more than the sum of its parts".
